Any UK Business Letting Customers Pay Over Time

DoOther Industries Need FCA Authorisation?

Businesses in any sector that let customers pay in instalments, or introduce them to a third-party lender to help pay for goods or services, may be carrying on regulated consumer credit activity.

Whether the activities fall within limited permission depends on your exact business model, who provides the credit and how the arrangement is presented to customers.

We do not suggest that every business within this industry automatically requires FCA authorisation. The appropriate permission depends on your exact activities and business model.

Sector challenges

What tends to trip businesses up

Assuming the rules don't apply

Many businesses treat payment plans as an admin arrangement rather than credit, and only discover the permission requirement when a lender or bank asks.

Unclear who provides the credit

The right permission depends on whether you introduce customers to a lender or provide the credit yourself under your own agreement.

Monthly pricing in marketing

Advertising '£X per month' on your website, quotes or social media engages the financial promotion rules regardless of sector.

FAQs

Common questions

Do we always need FCA authorisation to offer customer finance?
Not automatically. It depends on the activities carried on, the customer journey and the finance arrangements. Some business models fall within regulated consumer credit activity, others may fall within exemptions.
For firms whose main business is selling their own product or service, and where finance supports that sale, limited permission may be appropriate. Firms whose principal activity is arranging finance may require full permission.

Yes. Firms carrying on regulated consumer credit activities are expected to have appropriate policies, procedures and controls in place. We prepare tailored policies as part of the application-support service.

Financial promotions are regulated. Firms should not communicate financial promotions for their own regulated activities before holding the appropriate FCA permission or relying on a valid exemption.
